ABSTRACT

This chapter is intended to critique and assess the current educational system which is devoid from cosmology and suffers from a lack of an ecological insight. The philosophy of Western education was influenced by the mechanistic Newtonian model which looks at nature as an opportunity for exploitation not as a source for inspiration and innovation. This paradigm of education led us to a state of ‘nature-deficit disorder’ and contributed to the current global challenges including consumerism, poverty and climate change. Transformative education that is informed and guided by Islamic worldviews and the unity (tawhid) of mind and soul, natural and social sciences and Today (dunia) and Hereafter will be proposed in this chapter. This transformative education will be the hope for a sustainable human civilisation.
