ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on Sergius of Reshaina's translation technique in his version of the Corpus dionysiacum, a translation probably made towards the end of his life. Sergius is an important witness to the Syriac art of translation, not only because of his translation technique, which we can study directly in his extant translations, but also because of the information he gives us when writing directly about his method. Sergius seems to have reconstructed the original biblical reference by using the Syriac verb which in the Peshitta corresponds to the Greek in the passage of Exodus. The biblical component is perhaps the one which leads Sergius to make the deepest changes to the Dionysian text. The theological component leads him rather to a sort of 'debate' on the vocabulary of the original, as if he wanted to suggest that there could also be other ways to put into words what Dionysius always expresses by means of Neoplatonic language.
