ABSTRACT

In this chapter we introduce one of the most innovative family enterprises in the country with a particularly strong orientation towards ecological and social responsibility, thereby bringing integral economics fully to life, or indeed bringing it up to speed. The remarkable case of Pipistrel—named after, or indeed biomimicking, the bat—a world leader in ultra-light aircraft design and construction, is a prime showcase for the technological potential of Slovenia, and a demonstration of how to combine the highest technological standards with an uncompromising commitment to the environment. The culture of Pipistrel has a strong family spirit and is built on trust and profound care for employees and their development. Drawing on internal research, development and innovation and committing to continuous research and education is a combination that has become the major source for their continuous innovativeness.

Furthermore, a relentless dedication to social responsibility seems to provide a strong foundational philosophy and practice for Pipistrel, as for a large number of enterprises in Slovenia, on their way to becoming agents of sustainable development. It is for that reason that this chapter ends with a Slovenian perspective on social responsibility, which includes Matjaž Mulej, the country’s foremost voice in this field. In this context, the principles behind the international advisory standard ISO 26000 on social responsibility are introduced in relation to its three central concepts: first, the responsibility of each individual for his or her impacts on society; second, interdependence; and, third, holism. These are presented as an integrated model for the way out of the current global socio-economic crisis. ISO 26000 enjoys support from progressive companies, the United Nations, European Union and ISO.
