ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the patent, which is a key tool in promoting research and innovation. It presents an overview of the awareness, knowledge and utility of the patent system by researchers in the universities and research institutions in Botswana and the researchers' involvement in innovative processes. Patents have been known to play an increasing role in innovation and economic performance. Patents play a crucial role in the understanding of innovation and are important instruments of technology policy. The major contributory factors for innovation in any country are education, link between business and governance, communication which include internet and telephones, and the innovations systems. The business environment and climate in Botswana is very friendly and businesses enjoy tremendous support from the Government of Botswana. Botswana has invested in a world-class multi-service telecommunications system that facilitates provision of services remotely. The telephone system in Botswana has been expanding with the growth of mobile-cellular service and participation in regional development.
