ABSTRACT

This chapter describes augmented visual displays and audio and tactile cues used in human-robotic interface (HRI) displays. The first section provides background information on multimodal interfaces. We then describe ground control station interfaces and the developments in augmented visual, auditory, tactile, and multimodal interfaces. The third section deals with specific aspects of operators in moving vehicles, and then we focus on the specific issues that arise when robots are controlled by a dismounted soldier. Conclusions, recommendations, and future directions are described in the final section. As shown in this chapter, integrated visual displays, as well as audio and tactile cues, have great potential in the human-robotic interface.
