ABSTRACT

The Team Performance Laboratory (TPL) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) has a reputation for finding low-cost alternatives to high-priced simulations for use in aviation, security, and military applications. This chapter will address the latter of these areas, military applications, and discuss how researchers at TPL created the Scale Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) environment, what has been studied using this facility and the results of these investigations, as well as future direction for this type of research. In addition, a small but relevant experiment used to validate laboratory research with field study and its impact on (human-robot interaction (HRI) research as a whole will be discussed. Finally, the third major section of this chapter will discuss lessons learned, in conducting many studies, using the Scale MOUT environment.
