ABSTRACT
Each year, more than 3500 people lose their lives on the European railway system as a result of railway suicide and trespass incidents. These two different but partially overlapping types of events, account for 90 per cent of the total number of fatalities on European railways. In spite of efforts to prevent these events, the numbers of incidents are not falling. This chapter provides an overview of how these problems are being considered in the EU RESTRAIL project (REduction of Suicide and Trespass on Railway property), as well as examples from national prevention programmes that are implementing various interventions. An interesting example of collaboration between a wide range of agencies is being tested in RESTRAIL in Sweden. The chapter considers the transfer of knowledge and experiences from the investigation of railway suicide and trespass to the wider arena of railway security.
