ABSTRACT

Introduction There are changing demands on, and expectations of, cultural heritage in society and a need for approaches that are built on greater consensus and collaboration to ensure objectives are met in a sustainable way. Improving the relevance and effectiveness of contributions of those already involved in conservation and management of heritage, as well as facilitating the engagement of new audiences, has become a priority for many countries in the twenty-first century. The wellbeing of people around the world has become a major concern in all spheres, so the heritage sector has no option but to participate in this wider context and contribute to a better future for people and our planet, or it risks being sidelined. It is in this context that engaging people in the heritage process has become one of the most dominant issues being debated in the sector at present.
