ABSTRACT

Introduction This chapter describes two community engagement initiatives in India and the learning gathered from them. Both are personal initiatives and stem from an interest to address the questions: ‘What do people value?’ and ‘How does one engage communities in a meaningful dialogue on heritage and its conservation?’. In turn these two questions arise out of what I call the ‘conservation conundrum’. This is a dilemma that I face as a practitioner – a heritage expert with over a decade of conservation experience which involves local communities.
