ABSTRACT

Based on the findings in the volume, this chapter continues the debate by outlining four upcoming issues of outstanding interest. First, it discusses the dilemma of scale, a particularly pressing problem for CEE regions without strong metropolitan areas. Second, it calls attention to the interlocking system of dependencies which characterise development within the macro-region, and their potential mitigation through endogenous development and human capital investment. Third, it considers CEE’s place within ‘EUropean’ regional policy, and argues for cohesion-oriented solutions based on mutual European interests. Finally, it warns of the threat of centralist impulses within both ‘EUrope’ and its CEE member states, and offers an alternate agenda based on subsidiarity and increasing autonomy.
