ABSTRACT

Over the years many motivational theories have been developed. Management scientists have defined motivation as the process of exciting, directing and maintaining behaviour towards a goal. Motivation is highly complex because people are motivated by many factors, which can result in conflicts. Maslow's theory gives excellent guidance on workers needs relevant to their motivation. Expectancy theory is based on the premise of believing you can get what you want. People also are motivated by the belief that they can expect to achieve certain desired rewards by working hard to attain them. Each theory provides project managers with motivational insights that can be used according to the individual team members disposition. Understanding how people perceive fairness is critical to how leaders work with team members and drive their motivation. Project managers need to understand, through relationship building, team members tend to work and perform because they see that as their career.
