ABSTRACT

This chapter takes the process forward into the wider procedures for scheduling a programme of projects and then looks forward to planning a company's human resource levels in the longer term. Planning for future human resource requirements is a very inexact process, yet it has to be done to the organisations best endeavours, if only because staffing an organisation cannot be achieved at short notice. The process for a projects company begins with scheduling current projects, but has to be extended to include the full possible portfolio of future projects. A project support office will be the best centre for that scheduling but when full corporate resources are to be considered other experts must be brought into the process. They can include market researchers, strategic planners, economists and the sales organisation. A sensible approach is often to plan for a compliment of permanent staff to cover core competencies and have plans available for hiring from agencies to cover overloads.
