ABSTRACT

Many different kinds of project organisations exist, although most can be identified as team, a matrix or a mix of the two. Organisation structures are depicted and communicated by means of charts and although very simple, contains all the elements used in conventional organisation chart. One generally recommended convention for company organisation charts is that the boxes should show job titles but not the individual names of the jobholders. An organisation in which its managers typically have wide spans of control is known as a wide organisation. A project coordinator occupies a staff position in the organisation because the job carries no line authority. Companies that find themselves having to carry out their first project are advised to recognise this need for horizontal in additional to vertical control and appoint a person to plan and progress the project as it travels across the company organisation from one functional department to the next.
