ABSTRACT

It pleases me immensely to be able to submit this chapter in honor of John Polkinghorne. Over many years of Vatican/ Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences consultations, throughout the seven years of “Science and the Spiritual Quest,” during an extended stay at the University of Cambridge, and in countless international conferences and meetings, I had the privilege of watching John in action—his lectures, his prowess in debate, and his organizational leadership. Without his mentorship, I would never have been the scholar that I became. It is a testimony to John’s influence that many, many of the leading science-and-religion scholars of our age can repeat the same testimony.
