ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in subsequent chapters of this book. The book concentrates on the question of how the global reorganisation of services production alters the relation between and generates different sets of challenges and opportunities in the Global North and the Global South. It examines and provides empirical accounts of how changes in the geography of service delivery generate new interdependencies between services producing and services consuming regions across the globe. The book engages with the broader debate about the changing role of services in the global economy. It examines how the unbundling and relocation of services production fosters economic development and service sector-driven modernisation processes in new locations in the Global South. The book also explains how services help to mitigate the impact of and contribute to recovery from economic crises in the Global North.
