ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a empirical analysis of the role and importance of cultural industries in selected developing countries which evidently can be labelled as emerging economies, namely the East Asian Tigers and the BRICS countries. It presents a brief summary of strategic analytical issues pertaining to cultural industries. The chapter covers the evolution of cultural industries on the national, urban and export levels. In many developed economies, cultural industries have become more important as drivers of economic growth and employment. Cultural industries tend to concentrate in large cities due to the salience of agglomeration economies. To explore the position of cultural industries in the selected emerging economies and the two leaders, the United States and the United Kingdom, the chapter focuses on four key cultural industries: film, music, architecture, and fashion. Films and music are seen as cultural industries that tend to be bounded by cultural proximity and consequently may encounter difficulties when transcending its particular cultural setting.
