ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the InnoMat research project which seeks to identify how a new generation of ticket vending machines should be designed to best meet the needs of different user groups. In the course of the InnoMat project, numerous suggestions and technical concepts relating to an interface design that suits the needs of the visually impaired have been taken from the relevant literature. The blind and the visually impaired people find it difficult to use conventional ticket machines such as those in use at Austrian railway stations. Representatives of the Austrian Federation of the Blind and Partially Sighted (BSV) point to the fact that Braille is only used by a rather small percentage of visually impaired people mostly those who have been blind since childhood.
