ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book presents a wide range of research on interlocking topics in the construction of gendered mobilities, including issues of mobility capability and access, automobility and transport planning, travel and migration, mobile communications and use of the Internet. It explores the gendered discourses of mobility and how they have shaped the field of mobilities research, and then considers in turn gendered geographies of mobility, gendered technologies of mobility. The book focuses on some of the more positive developments in gender research for generating alternative mobility futures. Since time immemorial men and women have had different patterns of access to travel and movement, whether locally, nationally, or internationally, in both Western and non-Western cultures. Growing reflexivity around the gendered dimensions of mobility discourses may help women to more effectively intervene in debates around issues affecting mobility, whether in relation to transport, tourism, travel, or migration.
