ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses measurement for the purpose of evaluating the effectiveness of training systems and measurement for the assessment of trainee performance. It focuses on performance measurement technologies, and reinforces the message that care must be taken when relying on observer-based performance assessment. The chapter examines the nature and role of one particular kind of technology – automated, objective performance assessments. It describes the steps involved in developing, implementing, analysing, and reporting objective performance assessments, in addition to the logistical challenges to present the significant investments. The chapter provides an overview of the factors that can affect transfer of training, including the characteristics of the trainee, the training environment, and the work environment. It presents concrete guidelines for how to consider the merits of simulation devices. The chapter also provides an appreciation of the fundamental reasons why measurement is important in training, as well as many practical suggestions for how to go about applying good measurement practices in training contexts.
