ABSTRACT

Training needs analysis is the first step in producing a successful training system. The next step is to use the results of such an analysis to produce the design for a training system. This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part deals with some of the questions that arise when staff new to the field of defence simulation and training are confronted with the complexities of designing military training systems. It explores the issues of designing training systems that enable trainees to cope with the unexpected and to adapt to situations that go beyond standard operating procedures. The part considers the issues of training teams in virtual environments. It provides the reader with five key tenets for designing collective training systems. The part also provides an overview of the economic considerations of simulation-based training.
