ABSTRACT

Mutual is used in the sense of mutualism from biology. Mutualism is defined as, "The action or practice of a group of people in cooperating towards a common goal and for the common good". Relations of food where a "group of people would cooperate towards a common goal or common good". Shorter food chains and local producer-consumer connections signal an important shift in food systems as consumer driven quality. The Canadian dairy industry provides interesting insights into the benefits of innovative approaches to food connections and the creation of new food relations. School meal programmes are an emerging feature of the new food landscape and offer multiple solutions. There is also the opportunity to broaden the scope of food theory to engage more with ecological perspectives. If our policy and our actions at different levels prevent our realization of these desires, then we are costing ourselves our health and our wealth.
