ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a chronological overview of cases in which pilots, ATCOs, engineers and other aviation professionals were either criminally charged or convicted subsequent to an aviation accident. It presents some of the comprehensive collection of cases. On 20 February 1956 a DC-6 Air France aircraft operated by Transports Aeriens Intercontinentaux (TAI) scheduled to fly from Saigon to Paris, France, left Karachi for Cairo. The aeroplane descended to an altitude 1,500 feet below the minimum safe flight altitude for the sector. They continued to descend until the aircraft impacted the ground, killing 49 passengers and three crew. The Air France captain was convicted of involuntary manslaughter. On 16 February 1968, a Boeing 727 flight by Civil Air Transport Company (CAT) from Hong Kong to Taipei crashed in marginal weather during an ILS approach into Taipei's main airport. The director of flying for CAT, an American captain, was in the left seat and the Taiwanese co-pilot was in the right seat.
