ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on female immigrants in California, particularly Silicon Valley, and present specific findings regarding entrepreneurs in this group. In the United States of America immigrant populations vary significantly by state. In 2000, California had the highest percentage of immigrants followed by New York, Florida, and Nevada. Female immigrant entrepreneurs are varied and may differ depending on the human capital of the woman. Lower-skilled immigrant women may be driven towards entrepreneurship because of higher rates of unemployment or sporadic employment due to the nuances of high-tech production in the Silicon Valley area. Silicon Valley leads the nation in immigrant entrepreneurship, the majority of studies that have focused on these immigrant entrepreneurs have mentioned little about the immigrant women entrepreneurs of this region. Immigrant entrepreneurs were behind one in four US technology start-ups over the past decade. The chapter also focuses on four case studies about Galya, Saraswati, HaNee, SuMei.
