ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the case of a father-daughter succession in Brazil to shed more light on what is a relatively hidden and under-researched phenomenon in this country. Although succession in family business is a well-researched area, scarcely any investigation has been conducted on the needs of women in this process. In general, the choice of successor in Brazilian family companies is considered to be a male issue. Researchers have placed less emphasis on studies related to female entrepreneurs. The case study is based on a study of father-daughter succession in a company featuring male and female successors and explains how women fare when they compete with male heirs. In a study on family companies in southern Brazil, Scheffer identified the following possible difficulties in succession processes: the successor's lack of preparation, the negative influence of the family in business, the predecessor's reluctance to leave their company and successor's lack of interest in the family business.
