ABSTRACT

The enactment of Christian identity in and by the Church can be considered as a performance of sorts and a range of art forms can be interpreted as embodiments or enactments of Christian truth and tradition. The collection as a whole, then, does not comprise a linear argument, nor a singular, systematised proposal, still less anything exhaustive or comprehensive, but rather an invitation to explore the multiple theological resonances that can be set in motion by an artistic metaphor. The process of 'setting off' theological resonances exemplified here is a process of responsible, disciplined enquiry and discovery. The challenge is not to identify an art form or sense that is superior in every respect for theology, but to be aware of the distinctive strengths and limitations of each, with a view to each making its own particular contribution to the enrichment of Christian life and thought, and often in direct relation to each other -polyphony indeed.
