ABSTRACT

Most modern writers apply Jave la Grande to the controversial, apparent continent extending southwards from Java and Sumbawa on the mid-sixteenth century Dieppe maps. The outline of Jave la Grande, similar on all the Dieppe maps, is attached to Sumbawa, and on some to Java itself as well. Robert J. King reaches his conclusion regarding Jave la Grande's identity by examining three interrelated factors. None of King's artificial construct theory seems compatible with the detailed evidence regarding Jave la Grande's identity deduced from the Dieppe maps themselves. Peter Trickett treats the 'Vallard' west coast of Jave la Grande in much the same way as he does the east coast. Though the northern part of the east coast of Jave la Grande does perhaps look a bit like the northern part of Australia's east coast, there is no feature on the latter that even vaguely corresponds to the cap de fremose promontory towards its southern end.
