ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book presents ethical challenges for (military) health care practitioners during epidemics not only in view of the 2014/15 outbreak of the Ebola virus disease in West Africa but also with regard to the high likelihood of similar and recurring events in the future. It analyzes interviews that have been conducted with British military medical staff who were involved in the planning of the British mission to Sierra Leone during the 2014/15 Ebola outbreak. The book also presents the problems and challenges associated with the deployment of the material for a Russian field hospital to the Republic of Guinea and offers some legal reflections. It also analyzes the domestic and international reaction of the Canadian government to the Ebola outbreak and specifically focuses on the role attributed to and played by the Canadian Armed Forces.
