ABSTRACT

This chapter describes some of the new tendencies in dealing with representations of Nowa Huta in the transitory period of the early twenty-first century. It includes the relationships between practices of representation of space and other practices of production of space material, political, and quotidian that was studied by Henri Lefebvre. The chapter contributes to Lefebvre's project of investigating the functions of representations of space in social practices, paying special attention to the interdependences between representations of space and power relations by analyzing Nowa Huta. Simulation in Nowa Huta, however, was not restricted to the SocLand exhibition. In the local press of Nowa Huta one can often find the suggestion that the inadequacy of the representations of Nowa Huta stems from the fact that they are produced by visitors for visitors, and not by inhabitants for inhabitants. Thus, participation of the inhabitants in the creation of representation and their hospitality is a defining moment of asymptotical representation.
