ABSTRACT

This chapter expands the analysis of the negotiation of difference by paying attention to spaces that have been overlooked as loci for contact across class. It presents two case studies that focus on the interactions between middle class people and those in very disadvantageous situations as they work together in a shared activity - the soup kitchen in the Asamblea de Plaza Dorrego-San Telmo and the education program in Asamblea de Flores. It presents the analysis of the negotiation of difference by paying attention to spaces that have been overlooked as loci for contact across class. The chapter discusses the experiences of encounter in Asambleas Populares (Popular Assemblies) in the city of Buenos Aires. The chapter concludes with a reflection on how Asambleas Populares can contribute to research on zones of encounter and the potential they hold for the reconfiguration of class identities and the promotion of a more progressive urban politics.
