ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a description of the unlawful hunting of large predators in Sweden; explains to what extent, how and why it occurs, investigates who the perpetrators are and on what terms eco-global crimes. It illustrates the social and political conflicts that exist between humans and predators, as well as the consequences that these conflicts produce for the predators. The occurrence of unlawful hunting is thought to have prevented the few individuals that have made their way into the country from reaching the Swedish population. The chapter describes the local, national and international dimensions causing polarized attitudes and conflicts surrounding the much-debated Swedish National Predator Policy, as well as legislative changes and biological concerns regarding inbreeding, and also a number of other recent developments within the field. The chapter shows that the predator issue in Sweden is a topic that can be further explored through the framework of green criminology.
