ABSTRACT

Britta Kägler, ‘Serving the prince as the first step of female careers: The electoral court of Munich, c. 1660–1840’

The early modern electoral court of Munich employed a variety of female officers, marked by the heterogeneity of their backgrounds. For each of them, the court was not their only place of employment. This chapter explores if and to what extent working at court could be a starting point for female careers. Based on several case studies, a number of women were shown to be active outside of court service as well. In fact, a court career provided a platform for further economic and entrepreneurial activities.
