ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines how organisational aspects interact with technology deployment, providing examples from various sectors or domains. Lessons from these domains can be applied to help improve driver acceptance of new technology in the road transport domain. The chapter reviews organisational factors that are relevant to the introduction and acceptance of information technology systems. When new technology is introduced into an organisation, reactions to it may vary. There may be a natural resistance to change and limited acceptance of a system that requires learning and adaptation to new procedures. When new technology is introduced into a work or activity setting, it sits within physical surroundings, people, procedures and other technologies that together make up a total system. Technical knowledge among employees in a work situation can be an important factor in determining a user's success in the use and acceptance of new technology.
