ABSTRACT

This chapter suggested that, in the light of significant changes in the landscape of contemporary spirituality, there is need for a 'big picture' re-orientation of church school/Catholic school religious education to be more relevant to young people's spirituality, whether or not they become active in parish life. The real challenge for Catholic school religious education is to have an orientation and practices that can nourish the religious spirituality of the pupils who are already engaged in a local community of faith, as well as enhance the human spirituality of both the Catholic students who never will be churchgoing and the increasing proportion of students who are not Catholic. Two principal strategies will be considered, in proposing a re-orientation of Catholic school religious education. The principal strategies are access to the individual's inheritance of cultural religious meanings; and critical interpretation and evaluation of culture.
