ABSTRACT

One of the main effects of globalization is the tremendous increase in people mobility and migration (see Elchardus, in this book). For decades, Europe has constituted an important destination and space for this migration. In this regard Finland still has a relatively small alien population; nevertheless, a multi-ethnic reality is visible more than ever before. Though we cannot yet speak of a multicultural society such as, for example, that of the Netherlands, France, the United Kingdom or Belgium, there is an evident ongoing increase in ethnic diversity (Sabour 2001).
