ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the key findings of the 2008 study, with a discussion of the relevant theoretical foundations, the findings of various empirical analyses of workplace disability management in Switzerland and relevant aspects of its social framework. The notion of disability management as workplace health management has been criticized by, among others, Geisen who considers disability management synonymous with workplace integration management. In Switzerland, disability management is conceived as a pragmatic approach to providing care and support for staff in the event of sickness or accident rather than as a substantiated theoretical concept. Qualitative interviews were conducted in the selected companies with, among others, members of their human resources (HR) or executive management, a workplace disability management supervisor and two employees receiving disability management support. In one case, Barmelweid Clinic, disability management was also introduced when the provider terminated of the daily contract.
