ABSTRACT

Digital 3D human figure models are widely used in the design and evaluation of vehicles, furniture, assembly lines and other items and equipment with and within which people work. Human figure modeling (HFM) can help identify shortcomings early in the design process when recommended changes to the design are easier to implement. The chapter discusses the steps and techniques that can be used to improve the fidelity and accuracy of performing a design analysis using HFM. It focuses on HFM used for ergonomic and human factors engineering analysis as applied to military systems and equipment. Anthropometric data is one of the basic building blocks of HFM. It must be given careful consideration when performing a workspace analysis of the system design for the target user population. The chapter points out the models of specialized clothing and equipment, along with models of weapons, ammunition, tools, and other stowage items, are critical to an accurate design analysis of military systems.
