ABSTRACT

Road users have different capabilities, are influenced by social factors and their performance varies over time. In road design and traffic management differences between groups should be taken into account. There are considerable differences between drivers, and human performance and motivation vary over time. Some of the variance in performance is caused by aspects of the environment. This chapter discusses the following themes and groups: Older drivers: age-related limitations, Young inexperienced drivers, Emotions and aggressive driving behaviour. It becomes clear that especially feelings of anger and hostility seem to affect general task performance. These emotions are also related to violations and aggressive and risky driving. Reducing the number of interactions between road users and avoiding ambiguous situations are recommended strategies to address this problem. Emotions play an important role in everyday life, including how we behave in traffic. Emotions are regarded as abstract, high-level descriptions of the relationship between a person and their environment.
