ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the concept of ontological designing, prior to outlining practical tools and methods that compliment the concept of ontological designing, and offers a contribution to design for behavioural change via futuring. Ontological designing is useful for design for behavioural change as it greatly expands the understanding of the context that people hope to shift. Ontological designing draws attention to and provides a means to read design critically and relationally as it unfolds in the shaping of the worlds, and so on the being. The practical tools to apply ontological designing are broken down into tools that assist in 'seeing' ontological designing through reflective praxis, and tools that assist in designing for the desired change. Ontological designing provides a philosophy that attempts to better understand the material and immaterial impacts of design on the world.
