ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the significance of the thing as the outcome of labour. In terms of product design, at first a division of labour with manufacture was maintained. The design in a product has somewhat of an imperative power, yet it is has to be reconfigured to become aware. The projects were longitudinal, development project in retail chains in Norway. Even though many professions are engaged in the wrapping of wares, it does not deal with advertising, marketing, branding or storefront display. The chapter focuses on the role of design in the sales process engaging professional merchants and traders. After the presentation of the research design follows three sections that thematize different aspects of ware making. The first is an example of design considerations made by product managers; the second is during trade fairs and the third in retail stores. It concludes return to the alternative reading of Adorno's aphorism.
