ABSTRACT
This conclusion presents some closing thoughts of key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book achieved a number of its goals in attempting to fill the gap it has identified in the literature. It brought the question of demographic engineering back into the spotlight after more than a decade during which nothing substantive has been published on the subject. The book provided a sharper definition of the term, which neglects to define it, notably McGarry, Weiner and Teitelbaum and Bookman. It produced a typology which takes account of the potential and actual varieties of demographic engineering. The appeal of soft demography is not just that, as an explanatory tool, it illuminates how groups in conflict work to strengthen their demographic position. Bookman and Weiner and Teitelbaum use examples to illustrate the phenomenon but they do not attempt any detailed case studies nor do they make systematic attempts to measure the success or failure of demographic engineering.
