ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to surpass efforts to prove that lesbian/gay (l/g) families are good or bad. It explores the extent to which the concept of the same-sex family transforms the institution of the family as a gendered institution in the Czech context. The chapter focuses on the negotiation of gender in the lesbian relationship in the Czech Republic. It considers whether and to what extent gender is produced and reproduced in the context of homosexual partnership. The chapter proceeds from outlining the topic of homosexuality, gender and family in the Czech Republic; introducing the conceptual background of the study and its methodology; through to analysing the research material and concludes with the comparison to the Western findings. The findings also contradict the research that argues that traditional parental roles do not apply in the case of lesbian families, that traditional gender roles are absent and that, in replacing these, women invent new forms of parenthood and partnership.
