ABSTRACT

This chapter explores to understand contemporary cultures of fear as a consequence of socioeconomic and political developments. There are many serious consequences that result from the sociocultural hegemony of insecurity. The link between otherness and insecurity has become a core issue in contemporary Western societies. The chapter combines both distinguished and promising social scientists writing from an international perspective as they work in Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland and the United Kingdom (UK). It addresses a theme of great topical interest with innovative approaches so as to provide a comprehensive view of current sociological inquiry in continental Europe and beyond. The chapter also addresses contemporary issues in sociology, political science, social philosophy and cultural studies via two main foci that are contemporary fears, risks and conflicts and exclusion from full citizenship and social participation.
