ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an outline of how the issue of gender has been approached in the papers presented at the Brazilian Association of Defence Studies National Meeting (ENABED). It gives an overview of the trends identified in the studies about this topic, which have important influence and academic visibility in defence studies in Brazil. Through the analysis of the papers presented at the ENABED, the chapter aims to explore the discourses which arose about the theme in question. In this sense the discourses not only represent but also construct reality and are related to power. The discourses, their circulation and the way they arise provide points of interest, since they are seen as constructions which belong to a certain historicity; in the words of Veyne: 'Far from being misleading ideologies, the discourses map what people really do and think, and without them knowing it'.
