ABSTRACT
At the end of 2000 the Curonian coastal sand-dune spit was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Nevertheless, this unique natural phenomenon is still significantly threatened by natural disasters (for example, storms and floods), modern technology (for example, oil exploration, marine transport accidents and construction) and internal managerial problems. Hence the Curonian Spit is suffering from ecological, social and economic decay.
