ABSTRACT

The granting of credit to consumers is principally (but not solely) regulated by The Consumer Credit Act 1974 and the Consumer Credit Act 2006. These Acts contain a large number of separate Sections and Schedules. These, together with the latest array of Statutory Instruments (that is to say, Regulations and Orders) made by the Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR), previously known as the Department for Trade and Industry, and now Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) under the 2006 Act, are now mostly in effect. So detailed is the mass of legislation, it can only be described in outline in this chapter.
