ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on theories of collaboration, innovation and regional development. It presents the transformation at Raufoss, and discusses the development of collaborative initiatives. Raufoss is a relatively small industrial town, not far from Gjovik in the Oppland County in Norway and was known for its cornerstone company Raufoss Ammunisjonsfabrikk (RA), which produced ammunition and was established in 1896. When RA was established at Raufoss in 1896, the region possessed substantial handicraft industries, entrepreneurship, innovation and transformation skills, and had a growing modern industry. The establishment of RA was part of a national effort to strengthen the 'home forces' of Norway during the time of the union with Sweden. RA, the cornerstone company, formed and developed Raufoss through the years as a single company town with a strong culture and sense of community. The NCE-Raufoss focuses on lightweight materials and production technology.
