ABSTRACT

It is probably a truism to state that over the last couple of decades, companies (or corporations), particularly the large transnational corporations (TNCs), have attracted increasing levels of public attention in relation to the environmental impact of their activities. To some extent this could be due to the high profile of corporates in the modern economy and society (with the 44 companies included in Global Trend’s 100 largest economic entities generating over 11 percent of global GDP [Global Trends 2013] and with some of the largest and most powerful having political allegiances and/or influence over policy makers), and with the high media profile afforded dominance more generally, especially when their activities and operations are identified as having negative impacts.
