ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explains multi-factorial narrative, which is the nodal dynamics between culture, religion, and morality in Nigeria's health law and policy terrain; convey both conservative and liberal sentiments. It addresses the organization and financing of the Nigerian health system and the regulation of the system. The book focuses on fundamental principles of health law and policy. It examines various health initiatives established at the federal level designed to address both individual and systemic health issues in the country. The book argues that for the purpose of functionality and broader reach, it is important to introduce similar initiatives and strategies at the lower rungs of Nigeria's triple-tiered system: the state and local government levels. It discusses provisions outlined by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to address medical error as well as non-adversarial and Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) methods for resolving medical malpractice disputes.
