ABSTRACT

This chapter provides insights from a South African perspective in order to explain the content and shape of the EU-SA energy dialogue. The motivations of South African actors to get involved in the EU-SA energy dialogue is revealed as well as normative orientations and the mutual perceptions. The emphasis on Emerging Powers' roles in climate change is substantiated by the content of the Intergovernmental Panel of experts on Climate Change (IPCC) reports. The discernible part of an 'energetic cooperation' in South Africa includes already strong exchanges between national, regional institutions and private companies. South Africa has recently buttressed its 'going green' strategy in the international debate, focusing on sustainable development, climate change challenges, and renewable energy and, as a result, has started to develop national and regional energy policies. Recent consultation between civil society and businesses contributes to a cross-level energy dialogue with a focus on energy access and efficiency.
