ABSTRACT

The identification of “consumerism” as one of the major evils of contemporary society has become a popular trend in the media and the academy (Bauman 2007; Röcklinsberg and Sandin 2013). In general, we accept that we often buy, use, keep, and eventually dispose of more things than we actually need (Humphery 2010). Such overspending can have devastating effects, including damage to the natural environment and can contribute to increased social inequality. It also seems to harm our own body and soul, since it fosters materialism, selfishness and even new forms of addiction.
